Merry Camp DeSoto Christmas to All

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Lessons Learned and Relearned From Children and Each Other This Summer

While we try to teach our children all about life,
Our children teach us what life is all about.
~Angela Schwindt

These are lessons that we (KCox, Kelsie, Katherine, Kelly, Marsha, and Morgan) have learned or relearned from children/each other this summer.  It is amazing what children can teach you.

  1. You are NEVER too young to look like a mom
  2. Roll with the punches
  3. Laughing is the best medicine
  4. You only need one friend who will kill bugs for you (Kelly)
  5. There is so much joy in the little things of life... catching a kickball for the first time
  6. It is OK to miss home
  7. There is fun in every situation
  8. Don't get behind in talking to people
  9. It is ok to itch your mosquito bites
  10. It is ok to live with ants, especially when they are eating other bugs for you
  11. All you have to do today is... (love others, love children, teach horseback, etc.)
  12. Some of the best memories are made when you are exhausted
  13. You can make a living off of balloon arches and throw a heck of a party with twinkle lights and butcher paper
  14. Love really is spelled T-I-M-E
  15. Keep someone around who wake up early
  16. It is ok to go to sleep early
  17. How to hug someone so enthusiastically that you suffocate them
  18. Horse body parts are not easily explained... "Why is it growing?"
  19. Ant colonies can be very active and angry
  20. Making someone a friendship bracelet is the best way to thank someone else
  21. Beiber never gets old
  22. It is ok to be yourself
  23. Honesty is the best policy and it is transformative
  24. There is power in knowing names
  25. Enjoy the today

Camp DeSoto

I've been thinking recently, how exactly do you describe Camp DeSoto to someone who has never experienced it?  I can say that it is a little piece of Heaven, but that does not describe it fully.  I have been reading books on prayer this summer.  And last Sunday, I came upon a passage that Fiona Macleod wrote about a place named Iona.  It is a sacred and holy place.  So, I have stolen the majority of Fiona's words to help paint a picture of what exactly DeSoto has meant to me...

A few places in the world are held to be holy,
because of the love which consecrates them,
and the faith which enshrines them.
One such is DeSoto...
It is but a small mountaintop, fashioned of wooden cabins,
a few grasses tread by feet of many,
a few rocks that bring us together to worship,
and upon whose woods the birds and crickets never cease to sing their song.
But since the remotest days,
little girls have bowed here in worship.
The peace of DeSoto whispers to many.
On top of this mountain, a lamp was and is lit whose flame lights the world.
From age to age, lowly hearts have never ceased to bring their burdens here.
And here Hope waits.
To tell the story of DeSoto,
is to go back to God,
and to end in God.

This is DeSoto.

Soooo Sooo Sooo Sooo Sooo Soakedddd

Meet some of the fearless group...

We went backpacking last week.  We also went backpacking with a fair chance of storms starting at 8 pm that night and lasting until Sunday morning (we went on a Thursday).  So we started out in sun with some ominous.  15 minutes into the hike (not 8 pm more like 4 pm), it started down pouring.  We of course did not have any trashbags on the backpacks to keep everything dry.  By the time all the girls bags were covered, I was soaking wet.  The girls were wet.  Our stuff was semi wet at the time.  I made a really cool packing list for the girls.  It has Pocahontas on it.  It tells them to pack extra clothes.  I of course never follow the list, so I just had wet clothes.  We get to the campsite, and the rain stops long enough for us to set up the tents, have dinner, have smores (Montgomery got an amazing fire going), and have a devotion.  By the time we crawled back into our tents, the sky opened up again.  The morning comes, clothes are still not dry.  One tent slept in a puddle all night long.  They were soaking wet, their stuff was soaking wet.  BUT, it was a great trip with great girls with great attitudes.

The girls came up with this song...

Doe a deer we saw a deer
Ray a drop of golden sun... NOT
Me there is a me in team
Far a long long way to hike
Sooo sooo sooo sooo sooo soakedddd
La la la la la la long
Te te te in the woods
And that'll bring us back to doe doe doe doe

Not for the faint of heart...

DeSoto Story... that is what camp both 1st and 2nd term opened up with.  It is the start of all of camp magic.  Every activity has a part in the skit in which they showcase their activity.  I am in charge of Out of Camp Trips this summer meaning all of the backpacking trips.  So, I was hoping that I really didn't have to perform because there is one of me.  Shuler though asked a day before whether I had been working on my act.  My thought in my mind was "Oh goodness.  Solo."  So, I of course came up with this song.  It is not for the faint of heart.  Be prepared.  It may change your life.  No, I am not going to record a CD quite yet.  Still waiting on my big break.  But one day my friends.  Enjoy.

Special thanks to: Kelly, KCox, Kelsie, Kate, and Annie for their spectacular ribbon ball skills, and to Anne Elizabeth for the special music, and the DeSoto community.  You all have shaped me and meant more to me than you will ever know.

Drop it Drop it Low Girl

(This post is supposed to go in between Merca and 24 hour break posts) Well today is Wednesday.  I am in Chattanooga.  Yup, not at camp because I get a total of 30 hours off.  I got the grand privilege of riding the bus with the campers and Jared to the Birmingham airport.  Of which I was a little skeptical about.  It turned out to be a terrific time on the bus at least.  Poor Jared did not realize that bringing his ipod dock = jam session to Justin Beiber, Selena Gomez, and of course a dance session to Jai Ho one last time.  One of the campers tried to order a cheeseburger at 7:30 am of which I thought was hilarious.  She was craving a cheeseburger and why wouldn't McDonald's have burgers at that time, they are open 24 hours, at least the drive through.  The same camper proceeded to write about unicorns in the airport.  Jared also gave me some of the best advice of the summer.  Next time that I run into a snake, which is very possible I am supposed to start poking it with a stick.  If the snake gets frisky he will go after the stick and not me, thank goodness.  I look forward to trying out this foolproof plan next time I attempt a backpacking trip with a very LONG stick.  Anyway, that is not what this post is about.  Just wanted let you be in the know because it has been a while since the last blog.

So, the last Sunday rolls around.  We love Sundays at camp.  We also love the new campout that camp has created.  Instead of going to Little River Canyon (where Brian and I faced nature together), we now stay at camp.  The age group heads to the old campfire quad, and we roast hotdogs.  Well, this Sunday the kitchen did not pack enough hotdogs for everyone to have one.  So, Kelly (C-Otter) and Katherine (KCox) and I stress that they CANNOT drop their hotdog because there were not enough for redos.  So we get all the campers eating their hotdog or their PBJ and to our luck there are 4 hotdogs left.  Meaning that each of us got one and that we could split the 4th.  Happiness.

Then, one of the campers came up asking for another one because she is on a GF diet (gluten free), so all she can eat are the hotdogs.  The way she framed it made it sound that she was asking for two.  Good feeling was gone really quick.  I had to keep reminding myself camper over self, camper over self.  Finally we got it cleared up because I handed her the stick with two dogs on it, and she told me she just wanted one more.  So good feeling came back because we each had one.

KCox meanwhile has been busy roasting her hotdog.  It probably looked a lot like this.

The dog is on the stick nice and tight.  No way that thing is falling off.  Well Kelly and I head over to roast ours.  They are roasting and looking so nice.  Sweating like hotdogs do over the fire.  Well, my stick ends decide to burn off and drop into the fire.  What else dropped on in the fire as well?  Yup, my dog. After we had stressed DO NOT DROP your hotdog.  I dropped mine.  Utter failure and humiliation.

So KCox, C-Otter, and I all at 2/3 of a hotdog each.  They were sweet and shared theirs' with me.  We head over to eat on the golf cart to find that the lighter fluid had been leaking all over the floor of it.  At this point, we have coined the term, "Drop it, Drop it Low Girl" (technically some rapper did actually).  We clean up the lighter fluid and then C-Otter drops all of the peanut butter off the top of her brownie.  Drop it, drop it low girl.

Then, we head to unpack everything.  I am dumping one of the coolers out, and I hear a scream.  Kelly is dying laughing as is KCox.  KCox had thought she fully put the igloo on its shelf, but it decided to slip off and it hit her.  I do believe that she now has a bruise on her shoulder.  Drop it, drop it low girl.

I think that was the end of all the dropping.  Then I headed to take a shower, and discovered that I had a tick on my hiney.  I screamed and Katherine (Saucy) and Kelsie (C-Horse) came to help me figure out whether it was a tick or not.  They said it wasn't, I think they were so overwhelmed and shocked at the time that their brains couldn't process what they were seeing.  So I ran to Amy (she is now an official RN!), and she helped me remove it.  We definitely shared a special moment.

Oh, my little cousin Natalie won her horse show class.  Precious and so proud of her.  Look at that form.

She also now has a little entourage.

Oh, Kelsie did a wonderful job with the horse show.  We were so proud of her hard work.  I will say earlier that she dropped everything that she had worked so hard on alphabetizing.  Drop it, drop it low girl.

God Bless 'Merca

Camp DeSoto never celebrates 'Merca Day on the actual 4th of July.  It might seem strange to the rest of the world, but we love it.  So we celebrated it on the 2nd this year.

God bless 'Merca Day.  Picture just too priceless not to put up.  It's 'Merca Day.
